Reflection 5: (Lesson Plan: 1)

Lesson plan is a detailed description of course instruction made by a teacher in teaching his student. We were asked by our lecturer to create a lesson plan using CALL as teaching aid. We chose to create a lesson plan on action verbs, using daily routine as the topic and we targeted a class of standard four students with beginner level in English language. Our objective is to equip students with grammar skill specifically in action verbs and we hope that they will be able to identify what action verbs are, use the correct action verbs according to the situation, construct sentences using action verbs and present the sentences that have been constructed.
First of all, before creating our own lesson plan, our group members consulted our lecturer, Dr.Rozina, for further understanding. This is because we were having some difficulties in understanding the way to create a good lesson plan as we have no experience in teaching as well as creating a lesson plan. During our consultation, we asked madam some questions regarding our problems in creating the lesson plan such as the topic of the lesson plan, the games, and language site that we will use and the proper ways of teaching standard four beginner level of students in English language. By consulting our lecturer, we get the clearer image on how to create a good lesson plan as well as we are able to know the best method of teaching primary school student. Dr.Rozina gave her ideas on the best way to teach CALL to them as at first we decided to choose memory game and board game in teaching them action verbs but after consulting madam, madam suggested us to put away board game from the lesson plan as it is not a game related to CALL.
Apart from consulting the lecturer in writing our lesson plan, we also find another way to get the information which is by asking friends. Some of our friends who have taken Learning and Teaching English course provide a lot of helpful information on how to construct a good lesson plan. Since they have learned on how to write a lesson plan in that course, they told us what kind of information that is important and what is not unnecessary to be included in the lesson plan. In other words, the information we obtain from them has been used as our reference in constructing the lesson plan. Not only that, there are some friends who have taken this course in the previous semester. Hence, we take this opportunity to ask them as well. They give us the information about how the lesson plan will be evaluated. Although the information is simple and brief, yet it is really helpful and we have a better understanding of what we need to do in completing our lesson plan.
Since the lesson plan is related to CALL in language skills, there is a need to include teaching aids like software or language site to assist the process of learning the language in class. Hence, we have searched through various language sites in order to find the most suitable games for the topic of our lesson plan which is daily routine with grammar specifically action verb as a skill. At first, we have found games which are suitable for our skill but then those games cannot be linked together under the same topic. Thus, we made a decision to change our games in order for us to have games that are matched with our topic. We have spent a lot of times in order to search for the right game. This is because there are a lot of language sites which provide games but whether it is not interactive enough or not suitable for our topic and skill. Finally, we managed to find one game from a language site and the other one is a power point game template in which we can change the question according to the suitability of the topic.
Besides that, we also try to find a video related to the topic and we manage to download a video from YouTube. For example, our main focus of language skill is grammar specifically action verbs. Hence, we have chosen a topic which is the daily routine. Then, we try to find a video that relates the daily routine and we also consider the time or duration of the video. If it is too long, it won't be suitable for the lesson in class since the lesson will not be that long. However, if the video that we found is suitable and we will trim the video to fit in the estimated and possible duration. The video should also be suitable to the level of the students, such as beginner, intermediate or advanced. Otherwise, it won't be helping or giving many impacts to the students. Videos must also be interesting and catchy so that it will also attract the students' attention besides imparting the knowledge in their mind.
Apart from that, we also take the previous lesson plans as the examples or models for our lesson plan. The lesson plans may be of same language skill and maybe as specific as the topic. However, it may be quite difficult to find the same lesson plan as we want since every teacher may have different ideas on the topic to be taught to the students. Whenever there are a number of 2 to 3 lesson plans, the ideas of each lesson plan can be combined to be in one lesson plan. For example, the procedures of teaching may be different for each lesson plan. Hence, we can make a comparison for each lesson plan and try to combine them to be in our lesson plan and this will thus make our lesson plan to be more interesting and interactive. Since, the best lesson plan should be comprised of various kind of lessons which are, whole class, pairs, and individuals or this can be said as the hierarchy of the lesson in class.
